There’s more to a character than a ship. When I was younger, ship wars was a thing I shamefully took part in and now, I am more of a ‘let bygones be bygones.’
I shipped Gambit and Rogue since the days of the 90’s OG cartoon when I was little. Ngl I was a bit flabbergasted to learn about her and Magneto. It isn’t something I shipped initially—still have my preference for Gambit and Rogue. However, I do love my girl happier than anything else. She cares for Magneto and we cannot ever forget that. He’s important to her, even though she chose Remy.
What’s my point? There’s none other than: I am not participating in a ship war. Instead I found a new OT3 and can’t be bad about it: Magneto x Rogue x Gambit. Why pick a ship when you can have all three happily together 😂
Apologies in advance to OP for hijacking your post for a ramble, but you really touched on something that is very important to me about “Romyneto”:
A big thing for me that the (thankfully few) people who have been negative over my Rogue/Magneto stuff or Gambit/Magneto stuff don’t ever realize is that I have been invested in Rogue & Gambit since I was barely out of my toddler years. Like, I was 4 when the show started in 1992… Along with Han Solo & Leia, Gambit & Rogue were the only couple I was emotionally invested in from the time I developed an interest in romance in fiction. Even as a little fella, their romance transcended their limitations and Remy’s dedication to her always stood out so much to me. I was a little lad absorbing how love goes beyond physical limitations and a good man, even if a habitual womanizer & playboy, will happily learn to accommodate and if desired, be loyal in the face of something that can easily be made an analogue to a physical disability or chronic illness.
To give an example of how much of Rogue & Gambit stans me and my sister were growing up, in high school she had her bangs bleached to look like Rogue’s, haha. Rogue was like one of the holy trinity of X-Men bisexual awakening for her (along with Mystique and Psylocke.)
I’ve been sending some of my stuff I make over to her because while we cut our teeth on Rogue/Gambit, as adults now in our late 30s, we are more invested in the idea of Rogue’s happiness above all else.
I’m not gonna peer pressure people into picking up an O3P they aren’t into, but I am overjoyed that multiple people on AO3 and elsewhere have looked at/read my fan content and come away from it with a new appreciation for the polycule.
I get very frustrated by even in the modern era there being such a focus on love triangles for manufactured drama to force a woman to choose between two men, when she deserves both. I am old enough now and have read so much contrived fiction that I am more interested in the ‘drama’ of characters growing as people through their shared relationship and being forced to tackle their insecurities so their partners can be happy, and so they themselves can be happy too. Not forcing a woman to suffer or “settle”, not fans removing her of agency or fighting amongst each other, but simply allowing her to find her happiness. For me, that happiness is Rogue, a grown woman who can make her own decisions for herself - even when one man is a charmer, and the other is much older - that happiness is her being able to just have everything and not be forced to choose. Because got-damn does she deserve it, she deserves two men who love her for who and what she is and have so much to give her to prove it, both physically and emotionally.
But in the end, again, if an O3P ain’t someone’s jam, that’s cool, I respect that, all I ask is that others respect each other’s preferences and stop being little weirdos about fictional characters and trying to insist that other people aren’t playing with our dolls correctly. Honestly that goes for more than just X-Men, but every ship everywhere.
